Biosignal
Biosignal is a company formed to develop novel anti-bacterial technology. Growth of bacteria on surfaces is a major problem in many fields from medicine to household cleaning. Australian researchers discovered that marine organisms such as the red alga Delisea Pulchra, produce unique compounds called furanones which prevent bacterial colonisation. This discovery has immense application and the Institute is working with Biosignal to develop products based on this IP. The discovery is particularly important as furanones do not seem to trigger the development of resistant strains of bacteria – which is a major problem with all other current anti-bacterial treatments.
Biosignal listed on the ASX in April 2004 to commercialise a novel anti-bacterial technology. The first applications are reducing risks of infection from contact lenses and treating aquaculture equipment as an environmentally friendly anti-fouling measure.
