Institute Keeps an Eye on the Future

Institute closes gap between commerce and science

The career prospects of Institute for Eye Research student Riaz Rasul, have been boosted via a scholarship aimed at enhancing the commercialisation knowledge and project management skills of postgraduate research students. The PhD candidate was recently awarded a $10 000 University of NSW scholarship to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Research Management and Commercialisation. > more

 

Plan to eliminate avoidable blindness picks up pace

Chittagong, Bangladesh, 8 February 2008: Representatives of the international eye care community have reaffirmed their commitment to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020 during a four-day VISION 2020 conference held in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The Chittagong conference, organised by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and attended by representatives of the WHO, saw Dr Ivo Kokur, of WHO, present the VISION 2020 Action Plan 2006-2011. > more

 

IER Matrix Study establishes ‘real world’ silicone hydrogel solution guide

Sydney, Australia, 6 September 2007: Silicone hydrogel lens wearers came closer to ‘the perfect choice’ this week when research conducted at the Institute for Eye Research (IER) revealed the latest data on combinations of contact lens solutions and a range of silicone hydrogels.

The IER Matrix study results released thus far report on 640 experienced and new contact lens wearers in 16 groups of 40, who used each type of silicone hydrogel lenses bilaterally in conjunction with each type of multipurpose solutions on daily wear and were monitored over three months > more

 

Summer holidays bring an increased risk of eye infections

Careless contact lens wearers could be putting their sight at risk this summer by not cleaning their contact lenses properly.

Experts report eye infections experienced by contact lens wearers increase by at least ten times over the summer holiday period, believed to be caused by poor hygiene and common summertime activities such as swimming > more

 

Inaugural World Congress on Refractive Error, Durban, South Africa 2007

Institute for Eye Research is a founding partner of the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE). In March, ICEE hosted the Inaugural World Congress on Refractive Error where delegates delivered the landmark Durban Declaration on Refractive Error setting in motion new commitment to service delivery for 300 million people affected worldwide.

Two great Australians, thirty years on...

Cyclone Tracy inspired Brian Layland and Brien Holden. In the aftermath, the two optometrists went to Darwin to restore vision to those who lost everything, including their ability to see.

Dr Eric Papas has been announced as the new Director of Postgraduate Studies for the Vision CRC, Institute for Eye Research and International Centre for Eyecare Education. Sydney, 15 December 2006: Today the Institute for Eye Research (IER) and Vision CRC mourn the passing of a great visionary and internationally recognised Ophthalmologist. BANNING BACTERIA: Antimicrobial contact lenses

Bacterial contamination of biomaterials is a major problem in eye care and in the wider medicine arena. Bacterial contamination of contact lenses causes an increased risk of corneal infection and inflammation. Adverse responses occur at a rate of 10-25% in contact lens patients, and range in severity from minor inflammation, to the potentially blinding microbial keratitis. > more
