The Executive manages the overall performance and activities of the Institute, and is responsible for executing the priorities decided by the Board.

Professor Brien Holden, BAppSc PhD DSc OAM
Professor Brien Holden BAppSc PhD DSc OAM (Chief Executive Officer)
Brien Holden founder and Director of the Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit at the School of Optometry and Vision Science, University of New South Wales, Deputy CEO of the Vision Cooperative Research Centre, and was Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology.  He graduated Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of Melbourne in 1964 and gained his PhD from City University (London) in 1971.  He has held numerous academic, professional and university appointments.  He was a co-founder of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators in 1979, Vice-Chairman in 1979-1991 and President from 1991-1999.  He was the Founding President-elect at the establishment of the International Society for Contact Lens Research, was President of the Society in 1982-1984 and continues as an Executive Member. He is Founder of the Optometric Vision Research Foundation, being President from 1973-1982, and Founding Director of the Institute of Eye Research.  Brien Holden is active in international education and research and is the author of almost 200 refereed papers.  He is also active in international public health, being Chair of the International Centre for Eyecare Education, and Chairman of the Board of Management of VisionCare NSW.  He was appointed as the Chair of the Refractive Error Working Group of the World Health Organisation, and is Co-Chair of the Vision 2020 Australia group.  His distinguished contribution to optometry and vision science has been recognised with Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Science by the State University of New York in 1994, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1998, by the City University London in 1999, and the University of Durban-Westville, South Africa, in 2002; and he has also received a number of prestigious international awards, including a Special Recognition Award medal from the Association for Research in Vision and the inaugural International Award of the Academy of Optometry 2004.

Mark Willcox is Executive Director of the Optometric Clinic and Chief Scientific Officer of the Institute for Eye Research. He is also Professor of the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales, and an Executive Director of the Vision Cooperative Research Centre.  Following the completion of his PhD at Manchester University, he took up a fellowship in Australia at the Institute of Dental Research, and in 1993 joined the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales, and the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology.  He has published over 150 refereed papers.

Dr Vicki Evans, BOptom PhD, Head of Clinical Research
Vicki Evans became Head of Clinical Research for the Institute for Eye Research in November, 2006. Vicki was an optometry graduate from University of New South Wales, Australia. After working in private practice she conducted clinical trial research on silicone hydrogel lenses with CCLRU. Vicki completed her PhD in tear film biochemistry and dry eye with the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology Australia and post-doctoral research in the Department of Ophthalmology, Oxford University, England. In 2002 Vicki became the Professional Affairs Manager for CIBA Vision, United Kingdom, then Head of Professional Marketing for CIBA Vision, Asia Pacific, before taking up her current role at the Institute.

Yvette Waddell, MBA (Chief Operating Officer)
Yvette Waddell is Chief Operating Officer of the Institute for Eye Research. She has been involved with optometric research and education for the past ten years, previously as Business Development Manager for One Vision and Director of Administration for the International Association of Contact Lens Educators.  Yvette has a Master of Business Administration from the Australian Graduate School of Management, University of New South Wales.
   
Daniel Holden, BBus MHRM (Commercialisation Manager)
Daniel Holden, BBus MHRM (Commercialisation Manager)
Daniel Holden is the Commercialisation Manager for the Institute for Eye Research. His previous position within the Institute has been as a Human Resources Officer and an Executive Coordinator. Daniel has a Bachelor of Business majoring in Administration from University of Technology, Sydney and a Masters Degree in Human Resources Management from Charles Sturt University.
